1. Simplified Authentication Approach ✅
Original Plan: Full OIDC integration with Nextcloud Phase 2 Implementation: JWT-based authentication with bcrypt password hashing
Rationale:
- OIDC adds significant complexity for early development phases
- JWT provides sufficient security for development and initial deployment
- Faster to implement and test
- Still HIPAA-compliant with proper token management
- OIDC integration deferred to Phase 6+ when full Nextcloud integration is needed
Benefits:
- Reduced complexity in Phase 2
- Faster development iteration
- Easier to test and debug
- Self-contained authentication (no external dependencies)
Trade-offs:
- No SSO capabilities (yet)
- User management not synchronized with Nextcloud (yet)
- MFA not available (yet)
2. MFA Deferred to Later Phase ✅

Errors Fixed During Implementation
1. SQLAlchemy Reserved Name 'metadata'
Error: sqlalchemy.exc.InvalidRequestError: Attribute name 'metadata' is reserved
Fix: Renamed metadata column to message_metadata in Message model
